Waiting Until Monday

Having a Dr. Hubby means we wait until Monday. Last weekend Cougar broke his arm playing with friends. Using a ruler and an ace bandage we splinted it up as Chad ran through his list of "what they would do in the ER" and we did it ourselves. I felt unsettled all weekend, because I am not used to NOT running to the ER because we have a Dr in the house. In the end he got in to an orthopedic on Tuesday and it totally did not matter that we did not go to the ER. They fixed him up in a cast just the same.

Then THIS weekend Brock got sand in his eye at the beach. It swelled up like a mother and he was an unhappy camper. We were at the beach with another Resident DR. and between the two of them they flushed Brock's eye with saline thoroughly. Even with two doctors present I felt REALLY unsettled not taking my baby to the ER. They assured me he'd be fine and his eye looks much better today, but I am still threatening to run him to an optho tomorrow if he's not all better.

I know they went to med school at all, but do you ever feel like you need to run them to a "real dr" just to be sure?

  1. Ha! Ben IS an ER doctor (well, next month he will be officially, but he is done with classes and such now.) and I can't tell you how many times we have had this argument. He gets so mad at me when I doubt him. He's like, "How much money did we pay for me to go to school and you don't even trust me!?" Oops. I know how you feel though. They are your babies!!

  2. Haha! So true! My son had a fever of 105 and was really sick for a week. My first year resident husband kept telling me he was fine, and it was just a virus. I really wanted to just take my son to his own doctor to be sure! It is hard to trust them for some reason!

  3. well... in med school and even early in residency, my husband gave his opinion on lots of stuff. but as he has moved through his residency training, he most definitely tells me to go the the specialist, etc. for anything that isn't bones. i guess by knowing more in his specialty, he realizes that isn't a pediatrician or an obgyn or an internal medicine doctor.

does this make sense? i've read it three times and can't decide...

  4. Stephanie - so what you're saying is: the more he learns the less he realizes he knows. : )

  5. Ha I always think of the line on friends when the resident comes in the room to deliver the baby and she asks, "Ya and what grade are you in?" I would say trust the resident, but I'm not a parent yet! I'm sure one day when I have kids I won't even trust the first doctor I take them too! I can see myself going to get second and third opinions, just in case. Great post!

  6. Depends. Brad always defers to me if I really want to take them to the ER (ie Jaden coughing so hard he is puking for 2 days). When Calet bit off the top of her lip and he was on an interview, I was in a panic. He called an attending at one of the hosptials he goes to and he snuck me in so I could avoid the ER. Ah, the benefits of being married to a doctor...

  7. Haha! Yes! I do! All the time. We don't have children yet, but in terms of things going wrong with me and my health, I definitely have trouble believing he knows what he's talking about. Everything my husb tells me I usually verify with my actual doctor, or with at least three other people who may or may not be medical professionals. Then, when my doctor says the exact same thing he said, I get all excited and say things like, "AH! That's exactly what you said, C!" And he just laughs a little and shakes his head.
